Open Day!

30 members of the Club gathered on Wednesday, 18 July, at the Marine Travel Arena to celebrate National Table Tennis Day. As well as advertising to the public our own brand of daytime social table tennis for seniors, the Club were part of the plan of Table Tennis England to have 1 million people playing table tennis on Table Tennis Day.

The Club held open house from 10am to 4pm with both indoor and outdoor table tennis, a vibrant coffee morning advertising the Club's very popular Bat & Chat daytime social sessions for seniors, and members of the Club stopping passers by in the street advertising Table Tennis Day and what the Club has on offer. One of the most popular and fun activities of the day was 'challenge the robot', hilarious - especially when it was set on 'random'!

The Club is currently raising funds to build a new permanent home on the Marine site when the current room is demolished in 2019 as part of the football ground improvements scheme. The Club is aiming to raise £72,000 for the new home and have applied to Sport England for a grant of £45,000 towards the project. Sefton Borough Council are also proposing to invest £10,000 in the scheme, recognizing the community and health benefits of social and recreational table tennis. The Club hope is that a new home with improved facilities will enable us to expand daytime participation and also provide better and enlarged facilities for coaching for both juniors and seniors.

Among the trophies on display at the open day was the Liverpool & District Table Tennis League, Frank Murphy Veterans Handicap Cup, which the Club has won 5 times in the last 7 table tennis seasons. The 2017/18 winners were club members Andrew Armstrong, aged 55, Keith Williams, former Liverpool Men’s Champion aged 60 and club Chairman Ian McElwee, aged 71. The display of trophies also included the L&DTTL Division 2 Cup won by Bath Street Marine A, Barry Davis (Captain), Matthew Wilson & Colin Turner.

A very worthwhile day of fun, friendship and some gentle exercise! And as for the meringues on sale....... absolutely delicious!

Two of the Club's most senior members, Albert Parker and Barbara Alcock popped into the Open Day. They both seem pretty happy to still be part of such a thriving club?

They may look like security guards, but Club Treasurer  Ian Brownrigg and Committee Member Bernard Cooney did a fantastic job on Open Day, including parking themselves in the street and speaking to passers-by about Table Tennis Day, our Club and the opportunities that exist.

And below a small selection of pictures from the Open Day, including:-

1. Migs Morris with just a small sample of the delicious cakes on offer at the coffee morning - the meringues were particularly delicious!

2. Sam Pierce, Mark Benson, Brian Crolley and Keith Dudley playing doubles on the mini outdoor table. You should try it!
