Trophy hunt!

Each season the Liverpool & District Table Tennis League holds two main team cup competitions. The respective Divisional Cup competitions where all of the teams in a single division of the league compete against each other on a straight knock out basis for the Divisional Cup. And the second team cup competition, the Frank Murphy Veterans Handicap Cup. In the respective Divisional Cup competitions the Club had 3 chances this week to get a team through to their particular divisions final. Sadly, each of the teams fell at the final hurdle.

F Team (Division 5 - The Stamp Cup)

Team captain, Alan Hale, found himself without his rising star, Rafal Glowacki, due to a weekend injury, for his teams cup semi-final. Nevertheless, they were still able to take a decent team to Maghull on Monday. But on this occasion the visitors were just not able to match a determined home side. A very good effort from team No.1, Marcin Bytnar earned them a point and so nearly two, but that was their only success as the home side secured their place in the final.

B Team (Division 2 - The Rumjahn Cup)

Brian Crolley's B Team faced a visit to the divisional leaders Crosby High B on Tuesday for a place in this divisions cup final. A tough call. But in this match they put up a real fight. No.1 Barry Davis took a good win, and so nearly added another. Colin Mitchell put up real resistance and it also so nearly paid off. Had those two sets gone the way of the visitors this match might have been a totally different story. As it was, the Crosby youngsters weathered the storm, stood firm, and sealed their place in the cup final.

A Team (Division 1 - The Readman Cup)

The A Team, led by Colin Turner, also faced a visit to Crosby High on Wednesday, to face last seasons divisional champions. However, all 4 of the available A Team players found themselves also in the finals of the Southport Closed Championships, discovering that Finals Night of the Championships was also to be held on Wednesday evening! The team were faced with little choice than to concede the team cup match allowing the cup holders to move straight through to the final.

Maybe there was some consolation for the players though? Colin Turner and Sam Pierce combined in the Men's Doubles in the Southport Championships, but were forced to settle for the runners-up medal. Colin & Lawrence Kenwright were both defeated in the Men's Singles semi-finals. But the top match of this evening event was undoubtedly a pulsating final to the O55's. A match of contrasting styles between two of the A Team members Lawrence Kenwright and Matthew Wilson. And what a match this proved to be, Lawrence just sneaking it by 2 points in the fifth end. A real classic. Below a couple of pictures from the presentations at the Southport Closed Finals Night,
