The Action

 

In a break from regular league action, the scene was set for the semi-finals of the respective Divisional Cup events.  Sadly only one club team was in action and that was in the Division 1 cup, the Readman Cup. A home draw meant the club 1st Team faced the reigning Div 1 champions, Crosby High, at Marine.

 

What a match this proved to be, with table tennis of the highest quality. The club put out, arguably, its strongest possible team of Keith Williams, Clare Peers and Barry Elliott. And they faced Connor Whitehead, Lawrence Kenwright & Matthew Laird.

 

Of the sets played, only 1 was settled three straight, showing just how competitive this match was. Indeed it started with a shock, when, in the first set played, Clare overcame the visiting No.1, Connor, over 4 thrilling, and extremely close games. Matty Laird proved to be the star for the visitors winning all 3 of his sets with some superb aggressive play. Set of the night was probably the encounter between Keith and former BSM club player Lawrence. What atussle of top class table tennis this was, with Keith taking the set in the 5th end. Unluckiest player of the night? Undoubtedly Barry Elliott. Barry was involved in two titanic 5 game sets, and somehow both escaped him!

In the end it was Matty who got the visitors across the line, when Clare had no answer to his all out attack - where everything seemed to go on the table. The final result 2:5 in favour of the Crosby High Team. A terrific match.
